Today’s 1080p displays will seem similarly out of style in 2025.
A typical monitor sold a decade ago had a 19-inch display with 1,280 x 768 resolution.
While both tend to age better than a processor, they do eventually go obsolete.

You also can’t upgrade the display or the speakers. The same is almost always true of discrete graphics, if it was offered at the time the system was purchased. A chip designed for BGA is soldered to the motherboard, so it cannot be replaced or upgraded by the user.

Almost every PC in the category has a ball grid array (BGA) processor. Unfortunately the AIO, which will likely feel slow sooner than a tower, isn’t a great platform for upgrades. Today’s computers last a very long time, but after four or five years many start to show their age, and that’s especially true for systems that weren’t cutting-edge to begin with. Since an all-in-one is slower to start with, you’ll need to upgrade it more quickly. And, at the high-end, the AIO segment simply disappears. A thousand bucks will barely buy a quad-core all-in-one with a 1080p display, but the same price will easily net you a desktop with a Core i7 Quad, gobs of RAM and discrete graphics. The gap only gets worse as prices increase. It’s not an exaggeration to say the traditional PC is twice as quick. Even at that low price, you can easily snag a Core i5 quad-core with a base clock of 3.2GHz. Let’s assume the display brings about $150 of value to the system, giving you $580 to spend on a comparable tower. That’s a dual-core chip with a base clock of 1.7GHz and a maximum Turbo Boost of 2.7GHz. According to Newegg, its most popular incarnation is $730 and packs a Core i5-4210U. The best-selling Lenovo C50 is a great example. The all-in-one isn’t a great platform for upgrades.

As a result, the AIO market is full of desktops that have low-power versions of desktop processors, or even mobile processors inside. That means less space for components and cooling. Even basic activities, like web browsing, become more demanding over time, so the performance of your PC at purchase can impact how long it will be useful.Īll-in-ones are at a disadvantage because they’re built to be thin. In fact, the gap between the quickest and slowest systems is greater than ever before. Paying in performanceĭespite what you may have heard, performance is still important, even in desktop computers. But that comes with sacrifices that may haunt you a few years down the road. They condense and simplify computing into a single, elegant design that says goodbye to annoying, ugly wires. The appeal of all-in-one systems is easy to understand. While overall sales dropped, the AIO gained ground, and manufacturers aren’t complaining about that. AIOs tend to be more expensive than conventional desktops. Fitbit Versa 3Īll-in-one computers have proven a strong category in the declining PC marketplace over the last five years. The curved Samsung ATIV One 7 will be on display next week at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, and we'll be there to test-drive the system. Given that PC users typically sit very close to the display, Samsung might be on to something with this curved all-in-one PC. Other specs include two 10W speakers which can be stream music from your smartphone even when the system is off, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, and a 3-in-1 card reader. The system features an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. Unfortunately, the display is not a touchscreen, meaning that the user's input will be based on the traditional mouse and keyboard.Īlthough the display is obviously the main attraction, the new Samsung ATIV One 7 also packs a serious punch when it comes to the available processing power. Samsung claims that the curved display boasts very wide viewing angles (178 degrees), good color reproduction, and a brightness of 300 nits, elements which translate into an immersive multimedia experience. The 2015 Samsung ATIV One 9 comes with a 27-inch curved LED display which runs a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. According to the South Korean manufacturer, the new ATIV One 7 is the world's first all-in-one PC with a curved display. Alongside the new fanless ATIV One 9, Samsung also recently unveiled the 2015 edition of the ATIV One 7 all-in-one PC.
